We help non-profit boards work better together
Regardless of why, if your board isn’t achieving desired outcomes, we can help.
At CLIR, we have served on boards and coached boards; we understand the challenges boards face. We have the experience to coach, guide and create strategies that make boards more effective. We do this through:
Strategic Planning Workshops
Board Assessments
Board Development
Team Effectiveness Coaching
Committee Structure and Support
Start your board on a CLIR program by scheduling a complimentary intake session. We’ll take the time to understand your needs and the challenges faced by your board and organization. Together we can make a plan to maximize impact, alignment and effectiveness of your board. We’ll work with your board as a team and as individuals as they lead your organization to achieve the mission.
Why boards struggle
Whether for-profit or not-for-profit, boards are increasingly being called upon to help guide their organization’s success. Contributing factors to the frustration felt among struggling boards and organizational leadership include:
Increased pressure on the organization to respond to regulatory, risk and funding challenges
Lack of diversity in skillsets, capabilities and experience
Lack of transparency into the organization to assess problems
Need for diversity in demographics and lived experiences of board members
Ability for board executives to function as a team
Boards can also be challenged to function well because board members are comprised of senior executives who are often leaders rather than team members.
Move from big picture to big action
Help your board find equilibrium. Help them see how they can combine their collective experience to drive results. Get them the support they need and the guidance to work together as a unified force that performs with excellence.
We are also National Association of Corporate Directors members, making our team uniquely qualified to work in the trenches of board challenges.

We understand boards
Distilled from our experience serving on and coaching boards, here are four influences we have determined are at the heart of a board’s effectiveness or lack thereof:
Impact
Boards are increasingly being charged with higher performance and are under greater scrutiny than they’ve ever been before. To be successful and have the desired impacts on the organization, boards are requiring more transparency to monitor and strengthen performance.
Leadership
Leadership activities such as providing strategic support, raising funds, building community that further the organization’s goals are essential and require strategic focus by the board.
Function
The people, culture, decision-making processes and structures for how the board does its work must be defined. Leveraging strengths and diverse views is essential for efficient and effective stewardship of the mission.
Performance
Having the role of the board clearly defined in how it helps the organization to create social change is the most important factor in closing performance gaps.
